Study in India

Study in India

English-taught degrees at a fraction of Western tuition - the world's second-largest higher education system

India has more than 1,100 universities and teaches in English across most degree programmes, including at low-fee public universities - you do not pay extra to be taught in English. Clear strengths in IT, engineering, pharmacy, data science, management and medicine, with a real industry around them. The Government of India awards fully funded ICCR scholarships every year. VNIS supports institution selection, applications, scholarships and the e-Student visa.

Why India

Advantages of studying in India

English-taught, at no premium

English is the default medium for most degree and postgraduate programmes, including at public universities.

A different order of cost

Tuition and living costs sit far below the US, UK, Australia and Canada - for many families that is the difference between studying abroad and not.

Regular government scholarships

ICCR funds bachelor's, master's and doctoral study, typically covering tuition, a monthly allowance and airfare.

Close to Vietnam

Around five hours' direct flight from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; Indian Standard Time is 1.5 hours behind Vietnam.

The system, the routes in, and our services

The system and how to read quality

Four tiers: Institutes of National Importance (IITs, IISc, AIIMS, NITs, IIITs), central and state universities (public, lowest fees), deemed-to-be universities (academically autonomous, streamlined international admissions), and private universities (the widest quality spread).

The UGC recognises universities - an institution absent from the UGC list does not award recognised degrees. This is the first check, before anything else.

NAAC grades accreditation (A++ downwards); NIRF is the national ranking published annually by the Ministry of Education by discipline - the sharpest way to compare Indian institutions with each other.

Under NEP 2020 the bachelor's degree comes in three-year and four-year forms. The FOUR-YEAR degree opens the one-year master's route and is widely accepted for postgraduate admission in Europe and North America; if you plan to study on in a third country, choose it from the start.

Strong fields

IT, computer science and data science, next to one of the world's largest software and startup ecosystems.

Engineering and technology: the IITs, NITs, IIITs and BITS Pilani.

Pharmacy and life sciences - India is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical producers.

Management (the IIMs), medicine, and a group of liberal arts universities taught entirely in English.

Three routes in, and the visa

The Ministry of Education's Study in India portal (studyinindia.gov.in): one application across a network of more than 160 institutions and over 2,600 programmes; an offer comes with an SII code.

DASA: a scheme reserved for international students entering roughly 31 NITs and 18 IIITs on supernumerary seats, requiring an SAT score.

Direct applications to private and deemed universities: transcripts and an English certificate, the fastest route - but verify the institution on the UGC list before transferring money.

Visa: since 2025 India issues the e-Student visa (and e-Student-X for dependants), applied for online with the SII code, valid for the length of the course or up to five years. On arrival you must register with the FRRO within the prescribed period.

Scholarships and costs

ICCR - Government of India scholarships for bachelor's, master's and doctoral study, applied for through the ICCR A2A portal, usually opening in late February and closing in mid-April. Recipients must hold medical insurance at the minimum level ICCR sets.

ITEC - short professional training programmes funded by the Government of India, nominated through Indian missions.

Institutional scholarships: the easiest to miss because they are lightly advertised - ask the international admissions office directly.

Indian tuition varies by more than an order of magnitude between a state university and a private medical college. We do not quote a single national figure: we take the fee schedule of the EXACT programme you are targeting, with the academic year noted, and build the budget from that.

What VNIS does

Institution selection by field and by NIRF, checking the UGC list and the NAAC grade before you pay a deposit.

Applications through the Study in India portal, directly to institutions, or through DASA if you are taking the engineering route with an SAT score.

ICCR scholarship applications: eligibility, documents and the deadlines of the cycle.

The e-Student visa, proof of funds, and guidance on FRRO registration and the other first-month formalities after you arrive.

Why India

Why study in India?

Three arguments hold up: English-taught study without paying a premium for an international programme; costs an order of magnitude below the US, UK, Australia and Canada; and clear disciplinary strengths in IT, engineering, pharmacy, data science, management and medicine - fields where India has both good institutions and a real industry around them.

On rankings, read carefully. Few Indian institutions sit in the global top 200, but the leading group - the IITs, IISc, the IIMs, AIIMS - is highly selective, and India's own NIRF ranking is the sharpest tool for comparing institutions within the country. Choose by field and by NIRF, not by a single global number.

One thing to know upfront: India is vast and uneven, and the distance between an IIT and a newly opened private university is enormous. The hardest part of an Indian application is therefore not getting in - it is CHOOSING THE RIGHT INSTITUTION. That is the part we do with you.

Visa rules, permitted stay, FRRO registration and scholarship conditions are set by Indian authorities and do change. VNIS checks the rules in force at the time you apply.
