'The UK' is not one system

The United Kingdom is four nations and education is devolved to each. The biggest practical difference: a bachelor's degree takes THREE years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and FOUR in Scotland, where the first year is broader.

Because the English degree is three years, it specialises from day one - you apply to a SUBJECT, not to an institution where you choose later as in the US. Changing subject mid-degree is correspondingly harder.

A taught master's is usually ONE year. That is the main reason total cost at master's level often lands below the US even though annual tuition is higher.

Students not yet eligible for direct first-year entry have two routes: A-Levels or an International Foundation Year. They differ in length, cost and which universities accept them - ask before committing.

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS on a common timetable, with earlier deadlines for medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and for Oxford and Cambridge.

Questions worth asking that rarely get answered

Does the institution hold a valid student sponsor licence? Only licensed sponsors can issue the CAS that a visa application requires, and the register of licensed sponsors is published by the UK government.

Does the course include a placement or sandwich year? If so the degree runs four years, but you graduate with a year of UK work experience inside the programme.

Does this field require ATAS clearance? Some engineering and science programmes do, ATAS takes additional time, and finding out late means missing the intake.

Will the university accept your Vietnamese bachelor's degree for direct master's entry, or is a pre-master's required? Each institution maintains its own ranking of Vietnamese universities.

The Student route: CAS, funds, and how long you hold them

UK study runs on the Student route, administered by UK Visas and Immigration. Core conditions: a CAS from a licensed sponsor, English at the level the route requires, and sufficient funds.

The financial requirement is first-year tuition plus maintenance at a published rate, and the maintenance rate DIFFERS between London and outside London.

The condition most often missed is not the amount but the HOLDING PERIOD: the money must sit in the account for a required number of consecutive days before you apply. Transferring funds in just before applying is a very common reason for refusal.

The Immigration Health Surcharge must be paid to use NHS services during your studies; it is a single payment covering the whole visa period.

Some applicants are invited to a credibility interview - conducted in English, about your actual course and plans.

High tuition, short degrees

UK international tuition sits at the higher end, but with three-year bachelor's and one-year master's degrees the TOTAL cost of a qualification is often below the US. Compare totals, not annual figures.

The London / outside-London living-cost gap is large, and the visa rules acknowledge it directly with two different maintenance thresholds.

University scholarships for international students in the UK are usually partial tuition discounts, published per intake and with their own deadlines - often months earlier than the admission deadline.

Chevening is the UK government scholarship for master's study, with its own process and deadline; it is highly competitive and requires work experience.

Work rights and the Graduate Route

Degree-level students on the Student route may work during term within a weekly cap, and more during vacations. Some work is prohibited outright - self-employment and professional sport among it.

The Graduate Route allows you to stay and work after graduation with NO employer sponsorship: currently two years, or three for doctoral graduates.

IMPORTANT: applications made from 01/01/2027 are expected to receive a shortened Graduate Route of 18 months. If your timeline sits near that date, plan for both scenarios.

After the Graduate Route, staying on usually means moving to the Skilled Worker route, which requires a licensed sponsoring employer and meets a minimum salary threshold.
