Overview

Australia offers a clear, practical and quality-assured education system

Australia’s education system includes three major sectors: school education, vocational education and training (VET), and higher education. One of its key strengths is the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which places qualifications into a clear national structure and helps students understand academic level, progression routes and the value of each credential.

In this guide Pathway Map School Education VET, TAFE & RTO University AQF & CRICOS Visa 500 & GS Visa 485 Choosing a Pathway The most important point when choosing an Australian pathway: students should not rely only on school or program names. They should check AQF level, CRICOS, CoE, Student visa 500 requirements, Genuine Student logic, costs, OSHC and post-study plans. Learning Pathway

Common study pathways in the Australian education system

Vietnamese and international students may enter Australia through school, foundation, diploma, VET, bachelor’s, master’s or PhD pathways. The best route depends on age, academic background, English level, budget, field of study and post-graduation goals.

1 School Primary, secondary and senior secondary education, usually ending with a state or territory senior certificate. 2 Foundation / Pathway Preparation for university through foundation, diploma, bridging or packaged pathway programs. 3 VET / TAFE Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas and practical career-focused training. 4 University Bachelor’s, honours, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, master’s and PhD programs. 5 Post-study Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485 or career pathways if eligibility requirements are met. School Education

Australian school education: primary, secondary and senior secondary

Australian school education generally includes primary school, secondary school and senior secondary education. International students may study at public, private or boarding schools depending on the state or territory, budget, academic goals and support needs.

Public School

Public schools are managed by state or territory governments and can suit students seeking a local environment and competitive costs.

Private / Boarding School

Private or boarding schools may suit students who need structured supervision, academic support, extracurricular development and university preparation.

Senior Secondary Certificate

A state or territory senior secondary certificate provides the foundation for university, VET or pathway admission.

ATAR / University Entry

Some students use senior secondary results and ATAR for university entry, depending on state, institution and program requirements.

Australian high school can suit students who want early adaptation, stronger English and academic preparation, and a smoother transition into Australian higher education. VET, TAFE & RTO

VET and TAFE: practical, career-focused and pathway-oriented

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is a major part of Australia’s education system. VET can be delivered by TAFE institutes or Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), with a strong focus on career skills, industry standards and practical employment outcomes.

  • Common qualifications include Certificate I–IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma.
  • Popular areas include hospitality, cookery, aged care, early childhood education, business, IT, trades, design, logistics and community services.
  • Some VET programs may lead to bachelor’s degree pathways through credit transfer or packaged progression.
  • Students should check provider quality, CRICOS registration, placement requirements and visa logic carefully.
  • VET should not be chosen only because it appears “easier”; the field should make sense for the student’s profile and career plan.

Pathway Best suited for Key points to check Certificate / Diploma Students seeking practical, career-focused training or a pathway before higher-level study. CRICOS, provider quality, placement, tuition, visa logic and career outcomes. TAFE → University Students who want to begin with applied study and progress to a university degree. Credit transfer, pathway agreement, required GPA and target program conditions. Higher Education

Australian universities: bachelor’s, honours, master’s and PhD

Higher education in Australia includes bachelor’s, honours, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, master’s and doctoral degrees. Australian universities are known for research, employability, industry links and international learning environments.

Bachelor’s Degree

Bachelor’s programs usually take around 3–4 years depending on field, university and program structure.

Honours

Honours year or honours components can suit students interested in research, research master’s or PhD pathways.

Graduate Certificate / Diploma

Shorter than a master’s degree, these programs can support upskilling, field transition or progression into further study.

Master / PhD

Master’s programs may be coursework, research or mixed; PhD programs focus on advanced research, supervision and thesis work.

For Vietnamese students, university selection in Australia should balance field of study, tuition, state/city, entry requirements, internship or placement, visa readiness and post-graduation opportunities. AQF, CRICOS & CoE

AQF, CRICOS and CoE: three concepts to understand before applying

Australia has a relatively clear system for managing qualifications and international student programs. Students should understand AQF to identify qualification level, CRICOS to check whether a course is available to overseas students, and CoE for Student visa application.

Concept Meaning Why it matters AQF The Australian Qualifications Framework is the national framework for senior secondary, VET and higher education qualifications. It helps identify qualification level, progression options and academic or career value. CRICOS The official register of providers and courses approved for overseas students. International students need suitable CRICOS-registered courses for student visa purposes. CoE Confirmation of Enrolment issued after the student is accepted and completes required enrolment steps. A key document for Student visa subclass 500 applications. OSHC Overseas Student Health Cover is health insurance for international students. It is generally required for the duration of study in Australia under the student visa framework. Student Visa 500 & Genuine Student

Australian student visa planning now requires strong study purpose, finance and GS preparation

Student visa subclass 500 is the main visa for international students in Australia. From 23 March 2024, the Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaced the former Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for new student visa applications. Students must show that they are genuine applicants, understand that study is the main reason for applying, and have a coherent academic and financial plan.

Genuine Student The focus is whether the applicant genuinely intends to study and understands that study is the primary reason for the visa. Work rights Student visa holders can generally work up to 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session. CoE & OSHC Confirmation of Enrolment and Overseas Student Health Cover are important parts of study and visa planning. Temporary Graduate Visa 485

Visa 485 and post-study planning in Australia

Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485 allows eligible international graduates to stay in Australia temporarily after completing eligible study. Requirements, duration and costs may vary depending on policy settings, qualification type, age, English level and visa stream.

Post-Higher Education Work

May suit students who complete eligible higher education qualifications such as bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees.

Application timing

Students should check timing, English, AFP check, health insurance, age and specific stream requirements.

Field & location strategy

Field of study, state or city, internships and local labour market demand strongly affect post-study planning.

Policy risk

Australian visa settings change regularly; students should review official requirements before choosing a course.

Visa 485 should not be the only reason to choose a program. A strong pathway should make academic, financial, visa, personal and career sense. Choosing Your Route

Which Australian education pathway should Vietnamese students choose?

There is no single best route for every student. Students should begin with their real profile: age, academic background, English level, budget, intended field, visa logic, adaptability and post-graduation career plan.

High School in Australia

Suitable for students who want early adaptation, preparation for Australian university and stronger English or academic foundations.

Foundation / Diploma Pathway

Suitable for students who need a bridge into bachelor’s study or do not yet meet direct university entry requirements.

VET / TAFE

Suitable for students who prefer practical, career-focused learning or applied pathways with more flexible cost structures.

University / Master’s

Suitable for students with stronger academic backgrounds who want international qualifications and deeper professional opportunities.
