Verifying a Malaysian institution and programme before you apply

Malaysia offers a wide range of options across many price points, and that abundance makes the hardest question not "where to study" but "is this programme actually recognised". Usefully, Malaysia answers that through a public register rather than asking you to take marketing on trust.

Two things to check

• The Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) — the national quality assurance body for higher education.
• The Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) — the register of accredited programmes. This is where you look up a specific programme, not an institution name.

Why check the PROGRAMME rather than the institution

This is where families commonly slip. One institution can run fully accredited programmes alongside a newer one still at provisional stage. The institution is the same either way, but your qualification belongs to the specific programme you enrolled on.

So when an offer arrives, ask one precise question: what is this programme called on the MQR, and what is its current accreditation status?

Three questions to put to the institution

• Is the programme on the MQR, and at what status?
• Is the award made by the Malaysian institution itself, or by a foreign university under a branch-campus arrangement?
• If it is a partnership programme, which portion is delivered in Malaysia and which abroad?

Recognition back home

Recognition of a foreign qualification in your home country is a separate procedure, handled by that country's own authority, and does not follow automatically from an MQR listing. If you plan to return for public-sector work or further study, account for that step at the outset rather than at graduation.
