The zoekjaar: a year to find work, and why it is worth more than it looks

The Netherlands lets you apply for the orientation year within three years of graduating, and during it employers need no permit to hire you.

The Dutch post-study route is called the zoekjaar, the orientation year for highly educated persons. At a glance it resembles the UK Graduate Route or Canada's PGWP, but two features make it behave quite differently.

Orientation year (zoekjaar): 1 năm, nộp trong vòng 3 năm sau tốt nghiệp
Giấy phép cư trú "năm định hướng" (orientation year / zoekjaar). Trong năm này bạn được làm việc tự do - chủ lao động KHÔNG phải xin TWV - và IND không yêu cầu chứng minh thu nhập khi nộp. Có thể dùng để khởi nghiệp.

Feature one: you do not have to use it immediately

There is no requirement to apply the moment you graduate. The rules allow an application within three years of graduating. So you can graduate, work in Vietnam for a year or two, and then return to the Netherlands in a stronger position - with real experience rather than as a fresh graduate.

This is a substantial difference from countries that require an application within months of graduating, and one very few advisers mention.

Feature two: it removes the work permit barrier

During the orientation year you may work freely. No employer has to apply for a TWV. If you have read working while studying you will see how large that change is: the obstacle that gets students rejected at hiring simply disappears. You may also use the year to start a business rather than take employment.

When applying, the IND does not require proof of income. You must support yourself during the year, but you do not have to document how.

Where the year leads

The usual destination is the highly skilled migrant route (kennismigrant). This is where the orientation year pays back most:

Salary threshold after the zoekjaar: €3.122/tháng

That threshold sits below the one for highly skilled migrants generally. In plain terms, someone who has held an orientation year permit is easier to hire, because the employer must pay a lower minimum to sponsor them. For a recent graduate, that gap is often the line between an offer and a rejection.

On permanent residence: do not simply add up the years

This is the most misunderstood part. Time spent on a study permit and time on a work permit are not counted identically for every purpose. Some purposes count it in full, others do not. So do not total your years in the country and conclude you qualify - check with the IND against the specific permit and the specific goal.

Prepare while you are still studying

  1. Choose a programme with a placement or industry project - that is where the network starts.
  2. Learn basic Dutch. Not required for international roles, but it opens another layer of the labour market.
  3. Stay in touch with your placement host. Most first jobs come from someone who has already seen you work.
  4. Note your official graduation date - that is when the three-year clock starts.
