DAPIP - U.S. Department of Education ↗About North Country School
A co-educational boarding school for Grades 4-9 on a 333-acre campus with a working farm in Lake Placid, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. The only school in this group that takes students from Grade 4. International boarding for 2026-27 is USD 89,900, and the fee includes ski instruction, lift tickets, riding and music lessons. Accredited by TABS and NYSAIS.
- READ THE GRADE RANGE FIRST. This school takes Grades 4-9. Every other school in this group is secondary. If you are looking for a Grade 10 or 11 placement, this is not it; if you are looking for a younger child to begin abroad with a full residential programme, there are very few options like it.
- Tuition 2026-27 as published, and international rates are listed separately: international boarding USD 89,900 and international day USD 31,500, against domestic boarding USD 85,575, domestic five-day boarding USD 65,250 and domestic day USD 28,500.
- What the fee includes is unusually broad and worth costing against other schools: weekend and residential activities, field trips, professional ski and snowboard instruction, lift tickets to Whiteface Mountain, horseback riding, music lessons, meals and technology. At most schools several of those are extras billed through the year — the equestrian programme alone runs about USD 2,500 a season elsewhere in this directory.
- Learning support is priced separately and the ESL line is significant: English as a Second Language USD 9,600 a year, the Executive Function Learning Lab USD 9,600, the Learning Lab USD 4,600, and reading, writing and maths labs USD 3,275 each.
- International health insurance is estimated at USD 2,400 for the school year, and airport transport runs USD 50-420 depending on the airport and the travel date.
- The first-round international deadline is 15 December 2026, with rolling review afterwards. TOEFL Junior, TOEFL iBT and SSAT scores are encouraged rather than required, with no minimum published; the TOEFL code is B088. An interview by video or on campus is required of every applicant.
- The setting is the point and it is not for everyone. Lake Placid is a mountain town, the winters are long and the nearest major airports are a drive away. A child who wants that will be happier here than almost anywhere; a child who does not should be somewhere else.
The full fee table including the two separate international rates, the list of what tuition covers, the learning-support charges, the USD 2,400 insurance estimate, the airport transport range, the 35% aid figure and the 20-40% award range were read directly on northcountryschool.org on 17 September 2026 at /admissions/tuition-financial-aid. The 15 December 2026 deadline, TOEFL code B088, the encouraged-not-required testing rule and the interview requirement come from /admissions/apply/international-applicants. The Grades 4-9 range, the 333 acres, the farm, the outdoor programme list and TABS/NYSAIS accreditation come from the home page. Ask VNIS about this programmeTuition & scholarships
North Country School sits in the High tuition band. Tuition and scholarships change every year and by program, so VNIS provides the exact up-to-date figures for the program you choose during consultation. The school states that approximately 35% of its students receive aid and that awards typically cover 20-40% of total tuition. The aid deadline is 1 February. Read those two numbers together before planning: on the international boarding fee, a typical award lands somewhere between USD 18,000 and USD 36,000, which is meaningful but does not change the order of magnitude. The school publishes this more honestly than most — a stated range beats an unexplained maximum..
