Studying in Hungary: an English-taught degree in Europe from EUR 4,920 a year

Hungary rarely makes a Vietnamese family's shortlist, and that is mostly a shortage of information rather than a judgement about the schools. This article covers the three things that decide the matter: where the degree is recognised, what it really costs, and how to check a Hungarian institution before you pay a deposit.

Where a Hungarian degree travels

Hungary belongs to the European Higher Education Area, the group that runs on the Bologna Process — bachelor's and master's degrees and ECTS credits are mutually recognised across member states. In practice that means studying in Budapest and then taking a master's in Germany, the Netherlands or Scandinavia is an established route, not a recognition battle.

Hungary is also in the European Union and the Schengen Area, so travel between Schengen countries during your studies needs no further visa.

The first thing to check, and how

There is a specific confusion in Hungary that is worth reading this paragraph slowly for.

Many training providers hold an adult-education registration — felnőttképzés in Hungarian — usually shown as "E-00xxxx/20xx". That number is not a licence to award higher-education degrees. An institution holding one may be entirely legitimate, but if you read it as higher-education accreditation you are misreading the paperwork.

What you want is the OM identifier (an "FI" followed by digits) — the identifier a higher education institution carries in the register kept by Oktatási Hivatal, the Hungarian education authority. You can also search the institution by name at DEQAR (deqar.eu/search), the European database of quality assurance results, where Hungarian records are submitted by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB). Both work in English and take a few minutes.

Wekerle International University, Budapest

Its Hungarian name is Wekerle Sándor Üzleti Főiskola and it sits at H-1083 Budapest, Jázmin utca 10. It is a state-recognised private higher education institution with the OM identifier FI50782 and an operating permit dated 6 November 2006.

To save you the guesswork: the site footer shows two numbers, E-001726/2018 and B/2021/000326. Those are the adult-education registrations described above, not higher-education accreditation. FI50782 is the one to look up.

According to Hungarian Wikipedia the institution was founded in 2006, has about 676 students, and has belonged since November 2022 to Hope Education Group, an education group headquartered in Hong Kong. VNIS cites the source because these are not figures the university publishes. A private institution changing hands is neither good nor bad in itself, but it is something a family is entitled to know.

Tuition — and the part worth noticing

Fees published by the university for 2026/2027, in euro:

• Foundation Year: no tuition on any of the three tracks. You pay only the EUR 100 application fee and the EUR 300 registration fee.
• Bachelor's (7-8 semesters): EUR 4,920 a year for most subjects, which the university lists as an 18% discount off EUR 6,000. The Business Informatics specialisations are EUR 5,330 a year.
• Master's: Marketing Strategy and Innovation EUR 8,400 a year over two semesters; the MBA EUR 5,880 a year over four.
• Post-graduate specialist diplomas (2-4 semesters): EUR 5,040 or EUR 5,880 a year.

The foundation year is the item to notice. For many students a bridging year to build English and subject grounding is unavoidable and not cheap. Here its tuition is removed rather than discounted — if your child needs that year, this is a genuine difference in money rather than a marketing line.

Programmes taught in English

Six bachelor programmes: Commerce and Marketing, Business Administration and Management, Business Informatics, International Business Economics, Human Resource Management, and Finance and Accounting. Alongside them are two master's degrees and three post-graduate specialist diplomas, also in English, plus two foundation tracks in Business Studies and Business Informatics.

Scholarships: names, but no numbers

The university lists four awards — "Learn to Succeed", "Enrol One, Empower Three", a Talent Scholarship and a Merit-Based Scholarship — but publishes no value, eligibility criteria or deadline for any of them. VNIS has confirmed none of these terms with the university. Treat the four names as a question to send to international@wsne.hu, not as an offer.

Separately from institutional awards, Hungary runs a government scholarship programme, Stipendium Hungaricum. Its terms and the number of places are set by bilateral agreement year by year, so check the programme's official site for the year you intend to apply rather than relying on a figure heard elsewhere.

Five questions to ask any Hungarian institution

• What is the institution's OM identifier, and does the programme I want appear under it?
• Is this specific programme accredited, or is only the institution recognised?
• What exactly is the English requirement for the level I am applying to?
• Beyond tuition, what else is compulsory — health insurance, residence-permit fees, accommodation?
• If the visa is refused, is the registration fee refundable, and at what percentage?

Where VNIS stands

Plainly: VNIS holds no partnership agreement with Wekerle International University. The university approached VNIS in September 2026 to propose one, and this article comes from checking what it said rather than from a representation contract.
