Hope Christian Academy — costs, accreditation and what to ask

If you have just searched for "Hope Christian Academy" and found little before 2023, that is not your mistake. The school was previously Huron Valley Lutheran High School, renamed in 2023 after 48 years, adding Grades 6-8 at the same time. Every ranking, sports result and news item before that date sits under the old name — the same school, the same campus in Westland.

That detail was not in the briefing we received; it surfaced from the photographs that came with it, in which the students' class shirts still carry the old name.

WELS Lutheran, not generically "Christian"

The briefing describes the school's affiliation as "Christian". More precisely, it is a WELS Lutheran school — the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod mark appears on the school sign, and Niche classifies it as "Private, Lutheran".

For a Vietnamese family this is a real distinction rather than a semantic one. The synod shapes religion classes, weekly chapel and the school calendar. If that matters to your family — in either direction — ask exactly what daily and weekly religious observance involves, and how students who do not share the faith take part.

The easiest thing to misread: the published tuition is not yours

The school's tuition page carries a comfortable set of numbers: educating a student costs about USD 12,000, but because a network of congregations and donors subsidises it, families pay a variable rate of USD 4,000-9,000, averaging USD 6,000.

It is easy to assume your child pays something similar. But at the foot of that same page the school states: "Tuition rates for international students differ from above. Call the school office for more information regarding international student rates."

The figure quoted by the placing agency for 2026-2027 is USD 29,900, covering tuition and host-family accommodation after scholarship, plus a USD 200 agency application fee and USD 1,200 insurance, before personal spending and lunches on school days.

To be plain: USD 29,900 is the agency's figure, not a figure the school publishes. It may well be correct — but since the school itself says international rates must be obtained from its office, get written confirmation from the school before transferring anything.

Scholarships are assessed on three things: the ELTIS score, GPA and an interview. All three can be prepared for, so do not treat the interview as a formality.

Accreditation — the exact body, because it matters

The school is accredited by the National Council of Private School Accreditation (NCPSA) and received "Exemplary Accreditation" at its most recent review in 2021.

Worth noting: NCPSA accredits American private schools at national level, which is a different arrangement from the regional accreditors such as NEASC or Cognia that you will see at many other American high schools. Not lesser, but not the same thing either. If your child already has particular universities in mind, ask their admissions offices directly how they treat a diploma accredited through NCPSA.

Size of the school: two sources, two numbers

The school publishes no enrolment figure, so there are two numbers here and VNIS gives both:

Niche (read 16 September 2026): 108 students across Grades 6-12, a 9:1 student-teacher ratio, an A- overall grade, a 100% graduation rate, an average SAT of 1160 and an average ACT of 27.
The agency briefing: 80 students, 10 of them international, an 8:1 ratio and a 97% graduation rate.

The two sets do not agree, and neither comes from the school. What is reliable is the direction: this is a small school, with roughly eight or nine students per teacher. For a student still building English, small size usually matters more than any ranking — your child gets called on in class rather than sitting silent for a semester.

On rankings: Niche places the school #17 of 71 among the best Christian high schools in Michigan, #15 of 138 most diverse private high schools in the state, and #31 of 108 college-prep private high schools. The agency briefing cites a county-level ranking, which VNIS could not open to verify and therefore does not repeat.

Academics and activities

According to the agency briefing: the school day runs 08:00-15:00; AP courses are offered; and tutoring and academic support are available during study hall or after school with a teacher.

Sports by season: volleyball and soccer in autumn; basketball in winter; baseball, softball and track in spring. Activities include Student Government, the National Honor Society, HCA Ambassadors, Spirit Week and school dances.

At a school of just over a hundred students this has a practical consequence: the odds of making a team or holding a student-government role are far better than at a large school — and those are the things that go on a university application.

Note that ELTIS appears both in the application requirements and in the scholarship assessment — a strong ELTIS score serves twice.

Where the school sits: Westland, Michigan

Westland is in the Detroit metropolitan area of Michigan, with a population of about 85,000 as of 2020 — large enough for full services, small enough not to overwhelm.

The nearest airport is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW), a major American hub, which makes flights from Vietnam considerably easier than for schools in remote areas. The two nearby cities are Detroit and Ann Arbor, the latter home to the University of Michigan.

The climate is humid continental: warm summers, cold and snowy winters. Four distinct seasons are worth preparing for in both mindset and clothing, particularly that first winter.

Five questions to settle before paying a deposit

What is the official international tuition rate for 2026-2027, in writing from the school?
What does the USD 29,900 include and, more importantly, exclude — lunches, books, activity fees?
What ELTIS and GPA thresholds does the scholarship use, and is it renewed in the second year?
Are uniforms required? The agency briefing says yes, but the school publishes no dress code and the classroom photographs show students in ordinary clothes.
How are host families selected and supervised, and who is the point of contact when something goes wrong?
