UMass Dartmouth Gateway Program — enter a US degree at IELTS 5.0-5.5

Every intake, a group of applicants lands in one narrow gap: the grades are there, the English is half a band short. The transcript meets the bachelor's requirement, but IELTS sits at 5.0 or 5.5 against a 6.0 entry bar. The usual answer is to defer a semester and retest - six months spent, nothing accumulated.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has opened a route built for exactly that gap: the Gateway Program.

The difference is the word "credit"

Gateway is not a conventional pre-sessional English course. Students study academic English alongside courses in their intended discipline, and those courses carry credit toward the bachelor's degree. The time is not spent twice.

There are two tracks, chosen by your current English score:

IELTS 5.5 or above - one semester. 12 academic credits across 18 clock hours a week: English for Specific Majors, an Academic Gateway course, and four discipline-specific courses.
IELTS 5.0 with no band below 3.0 - two semesters. Nine academic credits at 24 clock hours in the first semester, then 12 credits at 18 clock hours. 21 credits in total.

English test scores must be no older than 12 months. Equivalent TOEFL and Duolingo scores are accepted.

Two things that make this lighter for families

There is no separate Gateway application. You apply for the bachelor's programme as normal; if you meet the academic requirement but not yet the English one, the university considers you for the appropriate track automatically. No second application round, no additional application fee.

Finishing Gateway means full admission - no English retest. The university states that on completion a student is "fully admitted to the appropriate degree program". This is the part most often misunderstood: many pathway programmes elsewhere still require an IELTS retake before progression.

Teaching takes place on the UMass Dartmouth campus and is delivered by the university's own faculty, not by a third-party provider.

Requirements and dates

Academic: GPA of 2.5 or above, assessed on at least the last three years of transcripts.
English: IELTS 5.0 - 5.5 (or equivalent TOEFL/Duolingo). At IELTS 6.0 you enter the degree directly and do not need Gateway.
Spring 2027 application deadline: 1 December 2026.
Fall 2027 application deadline: 15 July 2027.

Scholarships still apply

This is worth calculating carefully. International first-year students with a GPA of 2.75 or above are considered for merit scholarships of US$10,000 - 15,500 per academic year, and the award is renewable for four years while you maintain a 3.0 university GPA - so the figure multiplies by four rather than landing once. Transfer students with a 3.0 GPA receive US$10,000 per year.

No separate scholarship application is needed; you are considered as part of your admission application.

Costs for 2026-2027

The university publishes the following for out-of-state and international students:

Tuition and mandatory fees: US$34,936 per year.
With housing and food: US$53,358 per year - a double room for the full year plus the Unlimited Plus dining plan.

Set against a scholarship of US$10,000 - 15,500 per year, this is the figure to work backwards from at the start, not after an offer arrives.
