University of Central Oklahoma — costs and entry requirements

Most articles about American universities open with a ranking. This one opens with the number your family actually pays.

The University of Central Oklahoma — UCO — states on its page for international students that a year of undergraduate study costs USD 32,460. That is not tuition standing alone: it covers tuition and fees of USD 19,900, housing and meals of USD 10,300, and USD 2,260 for books, insurance and incidentals.

Why this figure differs from the one you see elsewhere

If you look UCO up on a study-abroad comparison site, you will probably find a higher number. Nobody is lying: those sites derive the cost from the out-of-state per-credit-hour rate, while USD 32,460 is the table UCO itself prepares for international students.

Which is the one that counts? The university's — because it is the table UCO uses to issue the I-20. When you evidence your finances for an F-1 visa, the consular officer works from the figure on the I-20, not from a comparison site. The USD 32,460 is the number with documentary force.

For graduate study, from the same page: most master's programmes run about USD 28,960 a year, the MBA USD 25,898, the MSBA USD 30,130, the MS in Finance USD 32,992 and the MS in Nursing USD 22,288, each based on nine credit hours a semester.

The university's scholarship page names Vietnam

This is unusual, and you can open the page and check it yourself. On its scholarship page for international students, UCO writes that applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand or Ivory Coast may be eligible for additional scholarship opportunities, and directs them to write to international@uco.edu.

The same page says the university awards about USD 700,000 a year in scholarships to international students, and that awards are in most cases stackable — with one stated limit: the total may not exceed the cost of tuition.

There is also an award few people find: the Nonresident Legacy Tuition Fee Waiver, which waives the nonresident portion of the fee if a parent or grandparent graduated from UCO.

Entry requirements: no SAT or ACT needed

UCO admits first-year students two ways, and you take whichever suits your record:

On high-school grades — a minimum GPA of 2.70, with SAT and ACT not required. In exchange, students admitted this way sit the university's Computerized Placement Test before enrolling in classes.
On test scores — SAT 1030 or above, or ACT 20 or above. This route is open during your final year of school, before you have graduated.

English for undergraduate entry: TOEFL 61 iBT (or 500 paper-based), IELTS 5.5 overall, PTE Academic 44 or iTEP Academic 3.5. If you are short of that, there is another way in: twelve weeks of intensive English at a UCO-approved ESL programme in the United States, after reaching TOEFL 48 iBT or IELTS 5.0. Graduate entry needs TOEFL 79 iBT, IELTS 6.5, PTE 53 or iTEP 4.0.

Two small details that save time: UCO's TOEFL institution code is 6091, and the international application fee is USD 40, non-refundable.

No fixed deadline — a mixed blessing

UCO states plainly that there is no fixed application deadline for undergraduate applicants. The upside: you are never ruled out for missing a date. The downside: it invites drift, while the F-1 visa appointment and the flights are what actually consume the calendar. Set your own deadline, at least three months before the term starts.

Three things that change the yearly figure

On-campus work up to 20 hours a week — the F-1 limit. UCO also opens research assistantships to undergraduates, not only graduate students; they pay better than routine campus jobs and carry real weight on a CV afterwards.
A payment plan — after your first semester, the balance can be split into three to five instalments.
A 35% housing discount for new residents in the Quad.

Accreditation — checkable, not hearsay

UCO is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, one of the six U.S. regional accreditors. You can look the university up yourself at hlcommission.org. For any American university this is the step to take before all others: accreditation is what decides whether your degree is recognised for further study or back home.

The university is public, in Edmond, Oklahoma, in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. According to Wikipedia it was founded in 1890 and had about 12,382 students in fall 2025 on a 210-acre campus — VNIS cites the source because these figures could not be read on the university's own site.

One closing caution, which the university states itself: Oklahoma fees may change without notice if the state regents approve an increase. Ask for the current fee schedule again immediately before you pay a deposit.
